I think the catch that Bill is alluding to is that Joey Camps backpacked(carried his stuff - self supported) the trail while JPD hiked it(others carried). Both are amazing feats.

    Bill,
keep the updates coming. There is another hiker, possibly Rhino that is also giving the PCT record a shot. Good luck to Joey, he certainly had an impressive run on the AT.

Cool. Does Rhino have a journal or blog to follow?

    How many Rhinos are there?
    How many are German?

Actually, my bad, wrong Ryan. It is a Ryan of the Tunahelper variety.

A not too shabby first week-
"So far things are well. First week miles are 53,53,54,44,47,51,52. Feet are almost 100%. Legs are great!"

50.57 MPD average on my calculator.

Anybody got a good PCT spreadsheet to share? I'd be happy to plug in miles.

Apparently Joey is good at construction too- https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater

Guess Steve Climber isn't the only one who owns Le French Wedge.

Just bill, how much do you agree with what the guy on facebook said, that Camps was disqualified for a formality?

In my view, Camps' hike was more than impressive. He probably has more natural talent than anyone else we've seen. If he can keep it up on the PCT that will be confirmed.

But, when you add it all up, Matt's hike was only about a day slower. The rule of not accepting aid in the form of soft beds, food, and all of the moral support that entails, from you family, is more than a formality. So, I guess I think the statment, Matt Kirk holds the unsupported record on the AT, is still valid in all respects, including the definition of unsupported. I'd be intersted to hear your take.

He got food and had a ride from his dad. It's not a "technicality", he wasn't selfsupported. Really sucks because it would be awesome for his record to be up there, but that's how it goes.
I doubt he'll lose sleep over it and someday someone will come in with a crazier time anyway.

These PCT miles are so cool.

LOL- I just thought it was a funny picture.

    Going back and reading-
If you take all the ranting, raving and over the top BS out of my earlier post- I agree with the Perception.
From the outside looking in, our rules are subtle. So subtle few understand them.
If you and I had a race, you won, but then I told you that you had to wear Altra Lone Peaks because I wore them and so you lost- you'd probably be miffed.
I know that Joey (and likely a few of his close friends) probably felt that way at the end of Joey's run.
He ran a race, put up a faster time; on the surface that is generally all that needs to be said.

But we agree that's not all that needs to be said.
    Record setter sets the rules.
Simple enough and after some explaining I got the sense that Joey understood and respected that just fine.

Joey did loose sleep over it, kicked himself for messing it up.
Bit of a shame to see such raw enthusiasm and talent go to waste and I get why his friends or family may not get it.
How many have friends and family who don't understand any hike in the woods, lol.

I think for the most part Joey's made his peace with it.
I think a good, clean trip on the PCT will go a long way to making things right with the trail.
At some point if he can harness that raw talent with smarts and balance it with experience; I find it likely that he will be "a legend", but that remains to be seen.

IF and when that legend becomes real I think the AT story and the hard lesson learned will prove to be the catalyst that pushed him further, harder and in the end turned out to be one of the most formative lessons of his life.

Reached out to some folks with Joey- so hopefully we'll get some news.

    Thinking on it again-
IIRC- 700 miles from Campo to Kennedy Meadows?
So based upon his first week of about 350 miles he's due there (with no issues) Thursday sometime.
No reception, damaged cell, or a million other minor issues are possible.

My thoughts are with him- but hopefully nothing major.

When I read the title I though Joey Camps was new type of campsite.

    Ditto

at that pace you are bound to have service, and resupply sometime. What bothered me is a few of his last videos seemed like he was pushing pretty hard, probably a bit dehydrated, and a bit less coherent than at first.

I hope he didn't get "Nature Boyed" or worse, Noro'd.

Honestly...gonna have to go with Occams Razor and say probably has no signal, or just has his head down, game face on and is gettin' into the thing of it.

Probably signal. He was good last time about updates even when they weren't the best news.
